"Screw you, O'Connell!" Izzy blurted. "Begging pardon for my French , ma'am, but every time I hook up with this son of a bitch, I get bullets in me! Last time I got my ass shot off!"

He swiveled to show them, and, indeed, the part of his coveralls he pointed to was somewhat flat.

"You still seem to have a serviceable bottom to my eyes," Evy said, delicately.

"Not to mine, lady! Two years later, I'm still in mourning for my hindquarters!"

Evy looked at her husband. "Colorful. But is he really a pilot?"

"The best... Izzy, enough of this nostalgia. We can jaw over old times, later. No time for that now— we need a ride."

Izzy slammed the maps back down on the counter. "No way! I go with you, I get shot—that's the way it always goes. Cause and effect."

O ' Connell folded his arms, as if he were the genie, golden scepter in hand. "Name once."

Izzy's eyes popped . "That bank job in Marakeesh? Huh? How's that for 'once'?"

Evy looked sideways at her husband . "Bank job?"

He gave her a pitiful smile. "It ' s not as bad it sounds."

"No," Izzy said, walking up to O'Connell, raving in his face, "it's worse!" Now the little grease monkey turned to Evy, as if she, perhaps, were capable of listening to reason. "I'm flyin' high, see, hidin' against the sun. So O'Connell, here, flags me down with a mirror, gives me the all-clear. So I fly in nice and low for the pickup, glide in nice and quiet, and that's when I see he's on horseback, with half the Marakeesh coppers on his tail, also on horseback. They start shooting at me, and I wind up in the middle of the road, my spleen hangin' out, and the big guy here goes galloping off with some belly dancer grabbing him around the waist!"

Evy cocked an eyebrow at her husband. "Belly dancer?"

"This was before I knew you," O ' Connell said to her, lamely, "and, besides, he ' s putting a really negative spin on it."

"Tailspin, you mean," Izzy said, "which is what I went into when those Marakeesh coppers shot me!"

Evy found a nongreasy spot on one of Izzy's shoulders to pat. "Calm yourself... Izzy. You and I are going to be great good friends...." She flashed her husband a look. "... It would seem we have much to talk about."

'Talk I'm up for," Izzy said. "Gettin' shot, that hobby I gave up."

O ' Connell, prepared for this reaction , withdrew a fat bundle of cash from his back pocket. He slammed it on a nearby table.

"Quit whining , " he said to the pilot. "You ' re getting paid this time."

Momentarily, Izzy seemed attracted to the cash; then he waved at it dismissively. "Well, that would be a helluva change of pace.... But 1 don't need your money. What do I need money for, in the middle of the desert? Anyway, I got an oasis in my backyard."

"Izzy, I'll get to the point," O ' Connell said, gesturing with the golden scepter.
